“Fuck” Vs “Diu” — English Vs Cantonese Swear Words

December 14, 2009 | 11:12 pm Share

Fellow blogger Eric Lee was talking about cursing and its effects such as stress relieve, express emotions or even increasing friendliness. Well I loved his post, totally! It is pretty comprehensive, go and read it if you have the time!

One thing I noticed though is that when we Malaysian swear, we automatically add in Cantonese or sometimes Chinese swear words, because apparently English swear words are just not enough.

Fuck is the most common swear word we use in English, and I think it should be the most vulgar. After all it is the most censored word in all western media. But in Cantonese there are so much other variations, “Diu”, “Hai”, “Gao”, “Chat”, “Lan” to name a few. Combine all of them and you can make endless overkill variations.

So, what the fuck, come and lets explore all the fucking words we can find!

Fuck Head

Fuck This!!

The most obscene and widely used swear word in English is none other than Fuck. Nowadays many major dictionaries has an entry on it, most interestingly this entry on idioms that contain the word Fuck.

So you can go “What the fuck?!”, “fuck like bunnies!”, “fuck this up!”, “fuck around!”, “fuck up that guy!”, “fucker!”, “fuck with him!”, or just the plain “fuck you!!” and each of them express different emotions. Well, I’m sure you can figure that out!

Here’s a video guide on how to use the word “Fuck”!

But then, what other English words that has equal power with Fuck?

I can’t think of any yet. The next swear word I think that comes close is probably “Cunt” or “Dick”. Apparently sexual organs can express quite some disrespect, but still, not as powerful as “Fuck”.

Other words you can use to scold people in English include ass(hole), bastard, idiot, stupid, jerk… But they aren’t actually censored on TV, right?

Diu Gao Lei!!

On the other hand, Cantonese swear words are all censored on TV, so I suppose they are much more powerful than the English word Fuck. Apparently any sentence when added with any of the Cantonese swear words, the basics consisting “Diu”, “Hai”, “Lan”, “Chat”, “Gao” will push the intensity of the statement up by at least 5 times.

For those who are unfamiliar with Cantonese, “Diu” means “Fuck”, “Hai” and “Gao” basically means “Cunt” and “Lan” and Chat” means “Dick”. I guess sexual relations still make up the most obscene words around the world.

Personally I think when the Cantonese swear it can be so much more flowery and artistic. In fact the ones that perfected it will make it sound like they are not swearing at all.

Don’t believe me? Watch this Hong Kong uncle, a swearing master in action! 70% of the clip is all his swearing, and wow, he’s the best!

For most of us who knows both language, we will still prefer to scold people in Cantonese because it is much more emotional and agitated, more artistic and expressive.

Of course if you don’t know Cantonese there’s nothing to say, but diuuu, what’s so hard about learning 5 more words to add to your repertoire of swearing vocab?

Swearing Resources

Just to share some of the videos I have gathered over the net that uses swearing or talks about swearing extensively. It’s fun to watch, just make sure your mom is not around!

Fuck this, any other fucking words you know?

Well there’s this library of how to swear in 100 ways in 20 languages, but well can someone show me some new ways to swear in English? Any other swear words that can replace Fuck, it is getting old and overused, alright!

So DIU!! Who you think wins, FUCK or DIU?!

FUCK wins hands down dude…..I could come out with thousands of artistic sentences too with fuck…However, cantonese swear words show certain degree of aggressiveness that fuck could not emulate at all….why I say fuck wins? using fuck can end up sounding very intellectual while no matter how you twist cantonese swear words, you still sounds a like street punk…haha

Please to know that my post inspire you although the contents are way too vulgar. I got to say, your post is way better than mine. haha

lol, well i guess there was a time when these words are considered obscene and naughty, but i guess today it's just everywhere, it's part of the culture already, so no use running away! xD

i only use swear words when i'm uber stressed or damn angry, but it's fun to explore! xD

haha well what you did is a great resource of how to use the language, i am just exploring the two swearing languages, so fuck that, there's no better or worse blogs :P i think ur blog is better than mine even!!

i still prefer cantonese DIUUU tho, it's exactly the so un-classy-ness that stresses the vulgarity and the obscenity of it. any sentence adding in some cantonese swear words and it instantly becomes a vulgar line, while in english you can try adding "FUCK" anywhere in a sentence but it doesn't always work. xD but true lar, since we msians are so western looking i guess if you use the word FUCK it does sound more intellectual to the average malaysian, lol!

Oh my god!!! You went to do extensive research on swear words hahahaha! You're so funny lah! Unfortunately the only swear word I use is Fuck. I don't use other words because I either don't know what they mean or think they are too gross to be used in every day vocab ROFL. I can't imagine scolding someone the name of a private body part – it is funny/eeky! LOL!!!!!

But hats off to you for going to the extent of collecting Youtube videos for us to see, can see great effort in there. I watched all of it, especially the handsome HK boy :P HAHAHAHA!

Good job again!

Gosh, watching the HK bus uncle youtube wuz highly stressful. I'm anti-violence, but I think I wld hv certainly decked him, and I'm sure the other passengers wld hv clapped and cheered.

perosnally, I really dislike swear words, especially those peeps who use crass words after every 4-5 words in their speech. I deem the the guys who swear to be a bunch of highly insecure peeps hiding behind those words to feel and portray themselves as tough and masculine. Hokkein words tops the list. But lousy karma has befallen me in that a close friend now uses them incessantly. How leh? CB KNN lolz!
